WFPL expresses sympathy with the message of President Moon Jai-in regarding the establishment of independence for ‘inter-Korean peace’ during Liberation Day speech
North Korea should keep in mind the respect and of message for common prosperity from Moon administration regarding the coexistence and economic development of both Koreas and peaceful and democratic unification. In response, it should show its will to collaborate for the peace in the peninsula.
While the national power of the peninsula has grown through industrial development, we are putting top priority on the settlement of security crisis within the division and press of cold war. There is no question that the peace on the Korean peninsula leads to the peace in the Northeast Asia. We are forming alliances based on security within the world powers and neighboring countries continuing discussions for establishing peace. South Korea is cooperating with US in regards to security problems based on the Korea-US alliance and is fully prepared for crisis. However, the nuclear and missiles of North Korea are factors threatening the peace in the peninsula and the whole world is paying attention to them.
LEE CHEE-SOO, SENIOR ADVISOR OF WFPL
Although we are placing the Korea-US alliance on the foundation of security, we should look at the security problems in a more independent way. President Moon insisted, “we shouldn’t wholly depend on our allies when it comes to our security. We should proactively settle the problems of Korean peninsula. North Korea’s nuclear problem should be peacefully solved.” Internet Newspaper Association of Korea agrees on the stance of Moon administration that there should be restrictions on the North Korea’s nuclear problem for the inter-Korean peace along with conversations.
The inter-Korean relations based on sunshine policy in the past 10 years derived the clarification of North Korea that it would stop its nuclear operations and the enhancement of multilateral diplomacy in Northeast Asia.
Thereafter, inter-Korean relations went through tight situations after a couple of other administrations took office, but the inter-Korean peace can be achieved through the restoration of relations.
To this end, North Korea should first show its will to freeze its nuclear problem. North Korea should also defuse the tension in the peninsula by refraining from threatening with nuclear and missile launching. Only then, the variables causing anxiety regarding the security of the peninsula will gradually be reduced. When this is guaranteed, North Korea would be able to avoid isolating itself from global pressure and restrictions.
Korea-US alliance should be used not for the collapse of North Korean regime but as a peace tool for alleviating military confrontations and for the future. Both Koreas should not make mistakes through backburning that can darken our future by being swayed by the tough remarks of Trump administration on preemptive attack against North Korea. Both Koreas should come up with the messages for the peace of the peninsula and suggest them to the whole world through active conversations.
China expressed support for the will of Moon administration on its aim to improve relations and achieve reconciliation and cooperation through inter-Korean dialogues. Chinese foreign ministry announced that “both Koreas should come up with conditions for removing tensions and resuming negotiations. Related nations should refrain from hasty actions and make responsible and precise determinations for the peace and stability of their citizens and regions.”
In other worlds, in order to make the circumstance in the peninsula more flexible and solve the nuclear problem peacefully, there should be wise and independent determinations between both Koreas.
The proposal on several alternatives regarding the meeting of separated families and the North Korea’s participation in the Winter Games in PyeongChang as the means for conversation appears to be highly appropriate. Those events of solidarity will serve as a meaningful chance to enhance our independence in that the possibility of neighboring nations downplaying the security problem in the peninsula as mere economic matter using it as political means. Our allies will also pay attention to them as they will serve as the message of peace and prosperity to the whole world.
Therefore, Moon administration should take the lead with the balance within the check on North Korea, coexistence and Korea-US alliance.
